She heard sounds from the flat above her, but couldn’t think what the reason was, because apart from her there wasn’t anyone in the house. The sounds got quieter and clearer; she couldn’t work out what kind of sounds they were, nor what was making them. Just as suddenly as they had come, the sounds went away again and the silence from before when they started was now quite different. She heard the soundlessness of the house and couldn’t think what the cause could be, specially since she knew she was not alone. 1989
